  • Select a wall with no windows or ventilation, take a measurement of ten feet from the wall and hang or insert the chart ten feet above the wall.
  • Make the person sit on a chair and make sure if he or she is in a comfort level per the test chart placed on that plain wall. Walls painted in images or arts would not be preferable.

Eye Test At Home For 3 Years Old Child and Above

Children around three years of age or even a bit above will naturally be carefree for this very process. They won’t be understanding what they are being asked to do and what for. That is why you as an adult need to be more convincing and understanding towards them. What you can do is that you can explain to your children the steps of the eye test at home as some rules of a game. Tell them that you all are going to play a new game today. For this, they will never take their steps back.  Also, it’s fun to do an eye at home.

The following are the steps to meet your needs:

  • The distance between the pediatric eye-chart placed on the bare wall and the seat of your child should be 10 ft. So ask her or him to be seated accordingly. The eye chart and the child should be facing just opposite tom each other.
  • Then tell the child to cover one of the eyes with the use of a disposable cup, or paper cup, or tissue, but without applying pressure to the eyes. Here, you need to more careful because the child might tend to peek from it. To do it more attentively and for better results, ask someone else to hold the covering piece.
  • Your child needs to see the chart properly. To reduce the darkness and haziness, use a torch, or a phone flashlight so the letters on the chart get more illuminated, and the child could see the chart without any trouble.
  • Now, the test can be divided into two different ways:
  • Make them read every letter printed on the chart.
  • Play a “pointing game” with your kid. That is, ask them to point in the direction where the letter “E” is facing. Keep rotating the letters three or four times simultaneously. See if your child is answering correctly.
  • Perform the same steps with the other eye. You might do it immediately or sometimes later according to your child’s wish and comfort.

Eye Test At Home For Older Children and Adults

Of course, the efforts required here will be less as it is being done for mature children and adults. You don’t need to explain things much.  The steps involved are:

  • Make the person seated 10 feet away from the chart and set the level accordingly.
  • Make the person cover one eye while testing for the other. Remember that if the person uses glasses with power, ask them not to remove and perform the eye test with their eyeglasses on.
  • Pose the torch or flashlight while the person reads each line, from the top bottom of the chart. Do not stop until the person finds a particular line or the letter difficult to readout
  • Note down the number of the last line the person has been able to read correctly.
  • Do the same with the other eye as well.

Expected Scores For An Eye Test

If a child is about three to four years of age, he or should be able to see 20/40 lines without any difficulty. 20/40 lines must be seen properly by the group of children ageing five. Now, if your child is not able to read the same lines while you perform the same tests on some other days, he or she might be suffering from vision deficiency. And after doing the eye test at home you must consult the ophthalmologist.

While talking about adults, they should be reading the 20/20 line, failing which the doctor should be consulted.

Before going to an ophthalmologist if you conducted the eye test at home, you must record the results. What you can note down the smallest number you or your child have been able to read.

Again, you must go for the above processes for your eye test at home but you cannot neglect to consult any professionals. Because only they are going to tell you the possible causes of the vision deficiency, or the diseases underlying them.
