The United India Insurance Company Ltd. was incorporated as a company on 18th February 1938. General Insurance Business in India was nationalized by the Government of India through the General Insurance Business (Nationalization) Act, 1972 (GIBNA) effective from 1st January 1973. The preamble of GIBNA stated that the nationalization of the general insurance business was undertaken in order to spread insurance coverage and serve the common man. Post nationalization, United India Insurance Company Ltd. has been one of the four general insurance companies in India and was governed by the General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC).
