The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is a paramilitary force of the Indian government. It was set up under an Act of the Parliament of India on 15 June 1969 with a strength of 2,800 and currently has 145,000 personnel. Its mandate is to protect critical industrial infrastructure facilities and it functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) of the Government of India. It is directly under the command of the Union Home Minister. CISF works closely with other agencies to protect key infrastructure facilities of the country and also provides security cover to private sector companies.
The CISF came into existence in 1969 with a modest beginning, having 2 battalions of strength. CISF is presently the world’s largest industrial security force and provides security to 300 industrial units and other establishments located all over India.
