The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was the former governing body of 8 out of 11 districts in the union territory known as Delhi, India. In 2012, it was replaced by three newer establishments: North Delhi Municipal Corporation, South Delhi Municipal Corporation and East District Municipal Corporation. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi was the world’s largest municipal body, providing services to an estimated population of 11 million people in the capital city. The National Capital Territory of Delhi has three municipalities: New Delhi Municipal Council, and Delhi Cantonment Board. The municipal corporation had a total area of 1,397.3 km² (539.5 mi²).
It also had the distinction of providing public services to rural and urban areas, resettlement colonies, regularizing unauthorized settlements, unregularising squatter colonies, etc. Within its purview were some of the world’s most densely populated regions.
