Eyesight Criteria for CAPF AC Recruitment
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) sets the medical standards for the CAPF (Assistant Commandants) exam, which covers the BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP and SSB. Candidates who qualify in the written exam and the Physical Efficiency Test must then pass the Medical Standards Test. The eyesight standards below follow recent UPSC notifications. They can change from year to year, so check the latest notification before you plan any treatment.

What “corrected” means: your vision with glasses (or after LASIK). You do not need 6/6 without glasses, but your refractive error must stay within the limit above.

Binocular vision: a squint, double vision or any other condition that affects normal binocular vision can lead to disqualification. Check the current notification for the exact wording.

LASIK Rules for CAPF AC Candidates
LASIK is permitted for CAPF AC candidates, subject to the conditions in the notification. The conditions I found in recent notifications are:
- The pre-LASIK refractive error must not be more than 6 D
- The candidate must have completed 6 months after LASIK surgery when considered for recruitment
Points to keep in mind:
- You do not need LASIK if glasses already bring your vision to the standard and your refractive error is within −4.00 D to +4.00 D (including cylinder).
- Plan your surgery so that the 6-month period is complete before your medical examination.
- Keep your pre-surgery eye reports and surgery records. The medical board may ask for them.
- The notifications name LASIK. Older UPSC notices said no other refractive surgery was accepted. Do not assume that SMILE, PRK or ICL are accepted. Check the current notification or ask the medical board first.
How the CAPF AC Medical Test Works
1. You first clear the written exam and the Physical Efficiency Test (PET).
2. Only candidates who qualify in the PET take the Medical Standards Test, where your eyes are checked against the standards above.
3. If you are declared medically unfit, you can appeal to the Appellate Authority named by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Recent notifications set a 15-day window from the declaration of the results, so check the current notification.
4. Candidates who qualify in the medical tests are called for the interview.
