Dilated-Pupils

Dilated Pupils

It is a process by which the pupil is temporarily enlarged with special eye drops(Mydriatic). This allows the eye care specialist to better view the inside of the eyes.

If the doctor shines a light in your eye, your pupil’s contract to restrict the overload of light. If it’s dark, your pupils dilated to let as much of the surrounding light in as possible.

The iris controls your pupil’s size. Your pupil gets bigger or smaller, depending on the amount of light around you. But in some cases, some people have dilated pupils without any changes in the light. It is also known as Mydriasis. And the opposite of mydriasis is miosis (pupils constrict and get smaller).

It can cause long-term vision problems like age-related macular degeneration. It normally occurs in people over the age of 50.

There are many different potential causes for medications, some are as follows: –

  •  Injury:

Blunt force, trauma, may damage the nerves controlling the pupils or the iris. This can disrupt the normal responses of the pupil.

  •  Brain Injury:

It can cause an increase in international pressure which affects your eyes.

  •  Drug use:

Drugs like cocaine, ecstasy, hallucinogenic, and crystal methamphetamine can lead to mydriasis.

  • Benign Episodic Unilateral mydriasis (BEUM):

It is a temporary condition that creates a dilated pupil in only one eye. You will also experience mild headaches, eye pain, light sensitivity, and blurred vision during these episodes. It is not a dangerous condition. There is a complete examination of the eye and the nervous system is necessary to ensure there is not a more serious cause.

Treatment:

It depends upon the cause that you suffer from. Doctors may recommend an opaque contact lens or light-sensitive sunglasses to help during the cause of treatment. But in some cases, doctors may advise surgery. So, it all depends upon the cause of your mydriasis to get a proper treatment.
